Biography
Thomas Martin Johnson, MD, is a psychiatrist with nearly three decades of diverse clinical experience encompassing outpatient psychiatry, hospital-based care, academic medicine, and clinical research.
He earned his medical degree and completed his psychiatry residency at the University of California, Irvine. He later served as an Assistant Clinical Professor at UC Irvine, where he educated psychiatric residents and medical students, supervised multidisciplinary treatment teams, and held leadership roles across inpatient and outpatient services.
His inpatient expertise included serving as an attending physician on specialized geriatric psychiatry and medical-psychiatry wards. Throughout his career, Dr. Johnson has provided care in a wide variety of settings, including forensic evaluations, emergency psychiatric services, state hospitals, correctional facilities, and community mental health programs.
He has also served as an assistant director and acting director of Electroconvulsive Therapy for refractory psychosis and mood disorders. These varied clinical environments broadened his perspective on the diverse needs of patients across a multitude of psychiatric conditions.
Dr. Johnson's commitment to advancing psychiatric care is informed by his background in clinical trials, mentorship, and neurobiology. He has served as a physician and sub-investigator in more than thirty clinical trials involving hundreds of patients, exploring emerging treatments for Alzheimer's Disease, Schizophrenia, and Bipolar Disorder. He has also contributed to published research examining the relationship between dopamine, a key neurotransmitter, and stuttering.
His clinical approach integrates an understanding of complex neural pathways and neurotransmitter systems with careful attention to overall medical well-being. He emphasizes thorough medical clearance, accurate medication reconciliation, and vigilance for underlying medical conditions that may present as or contribute to psychiatric symptoms. His treatment philosophy also values an active partnership with general medicine.
Dr. Johnson is dedicated to understanding the unique narrative behind each patient's symptoms. When addressing concerns such as insomnia, he looks beyond a simple diagnosis to understand how symptoms present, when they began, and what may accompany them, such as nightmares, snoring, or undiagnosed sleep apnea.
He values the therapeutic alliance and believes that when patients arrive prepared, organized, and ready to collaborate, visits can be highly productive. His care is tailored to the individual, honoring the complexity of each patient's mental health and personal story.
Dr. Johnson remains committed to lifelong learning and to providing thoughtful, comprehensive psychiatric care.
